Where to go in August

Not sure where to travel for your August holiday? Try one of these choices from Lonely Planet Magazine’s article ‘Perfect Trips for 2010′ (January 2010 issue):

Kenya

The annual migration of the wildebeest through the Serengeti reaches its peak this month, accompanied by a literally mouthwatering parade of the great predators of the plains. It remains one of the planet’s most incredible spectacles, and should be high up on the dream travel checklist of every wildlife enthusiast (magicalkenya.com).

Iceland

This beautiful country hides its light under a bushel for half the year, but throughout the summer, Iceland blossoms. The temperature hits the roof (for Scandinavia, anyway), and the roads to the interior are opened - take a road trip through the hot springs and pastel mountains at Landmannalaugar, or see thousands of puffin chicks take flight from the glorious Vestmannaeyjar islands (visiticeland.com).

South Africa

The Northern Cape province of Namaqualand is blooming, as thousands of bright flowers transform the desert into a fluorescent rainbow (arkie.co.za).

Kamchatka

This Russian peninsula of still-steaming volcanic rock and deep forest is one of the last true wildernesses. Brown bears gather on the shores of the rivers here to feast upon the salmon within (travelkamchatka.com).

Where to avoid: The Med

Yes, the weather might be baking, the sea warm and the nightlife in full swing. But the French, Spanish and Italian coasts can be rammed with holidaymakers this month so it’s definitely worth waiting a month or two before heading for the sun - if you can help it.
